The US Army established its Psychological Warfare PSYWAR Division of the Army General School at Fort Riley Kansas and activated US Army Psychological Warfare Center and School in 1950. The Psychological Warfare Center incorporated deployable tactical units for psychological and unconventional warfare field operations and the School provided specialist training for these disciplines.

US Army Psychological Warfare Center and School relocated to Fort Bragg in 1952 and was redesignated US Army Center for Special Warfare and Special Warfare School. The Center for Special Warfare continued to provide specialist units for field operations while the School continued to develop doctrine techniques training and education of Special Forces and Psychological Operations personnel.

Counterinsurgency was added to The Special Warfare School’s tasking in 1960. The Center for Special Warfare activated its Special Forces Training Group in 1962 tasked with dedicated training of enlisted volunteers for operational assignments within Special Forces units. Special Warfare School formed its Advanced Training Committee to explore and develop methods of infiltration and exfiltration.

Special Warfare School was redesignated US Army Institute for Military Assistance on 16 May 1969 controlling Special Forces School Psychological Operations School Military Assistance Training Advisors School Counter Insurgency School Unconventional Warfare School and Department of Non Resident Training. The curriculum was expanded to provide training in high altitude low opening HALO parachute infiltration and SCUBA operations.

The US Army Civil Affairs School was reassigned to The Center for Special Warfare and Special Warfare School relocating to Fort Bragg from Fort Gordon Georgia to Fort Bragg on 1 April 1972. The Center for Special Warfare and Special Warfare School was reassigned to the newly formed US Army Training and Doctrine Command TRADOC in 1973. As with individual Special Forces Groups the Special Warfare School established its own organic aviation detachment including a compliment of UH 1D Huey transport helicopters and a limited maintenance section.

The Center for Special Warfare was separated from the Special Warfare School to form an independent TRADOC activity redesignated as US Army John F Kennedy Special Warfare Center SWC on 1 June 1982 integrating special operations into Army systems training and operations.

SWC established of six training departments Special Forces Dept Special Operations Advanced Skills Dept Survival Evasion Resistance and Escape SERE Dept Foreign Area Officer Dept Civil Affairs Dept and the Psychological Operations Dept in 1985 and was renamed US Army John F Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School SWCS. A Non commissioned Officer Academy was activated in 1987.

SWCS was reassigned to US Army Special Operations Command USASOC on 20 June 1990 to bring all US Army Special Operations Force components except for forward deployed units under USASOC control.
