165 Combat Aviation Group was activated on 17 February 1969 at Long Binh Vietnam to assume overall responsibility for US Army Air Traffic Control over South Vietnam on the renaming and enlargement of 58 Aviation Battalion to cater for the increase in US Army air traffic. 165 CAG took over its assigned of 125 Aviation Company Air Traffic Control at Bien Hoa 120 AHC at Long Binh and Saigon the Command Aircraft Company equipped with U 21s at Plantation and the 36 Aviation Detachments operating Army airfields in South Vietnam.

With the reduction in operations 165 Combat Aviation Group disbanded in January 1972 with the remaining airfield units reporting direct to 1 Aviation Brigade.
