162nd Aviation Company Air Mobile Light AML was activated on 1 September 1965 at Ft Benning Georgia in the Regular Army and began training under 10th Aviation Group in December 1965 using their UH 1B Huey helicopters. Support was provided by three attached detachments with 407th Transportation Detachment for direct support 450th Signal Detachment for avionics support and 758th Medical Detachment providing medical support. 162nd Aviation Company adopted the call sign Dragon at Ft Benning.

162nd Aviation Company deployed to Phouc Vinh Saigon Vietnam on 3 February 1966 assigned to 11th Combat Aviation Battalion CAB to support the 1st Infantry Division and all other US Army infantry Special Forces and allied operations in the III Corps area. The Company received seventeen UH 1D Huey assault troop transport helicopters for its two slick platoons and eight UH 1C armed attack helicopters for its gunship platoon. As the Dragon call sign was already being used by a unit in Saigon 162nd Avn Co adopted new call signs with Vulture for the two slick platoons and maintenance and Copperheads for the armed helicopter gun platoon. The Company’s motto Set the Standard was shortened to STS for inclusion on logos and unofficially became Slicker Than Shit. 162nd Aviation Company Air Mobile Light was redesignated 162nd Assault Helicopter Company.

The company was reassigned to the 214th Combat Aviation Battalion and relocated to Dong Tam upper Delta on 1 November 1968 providing support to 9th Infantry Division. 162nd Assault Helicopter Company was reassigned to the 13th Combat Aviation Battalion and relocated to Can Tho to operate AB in the Mekong Delta when 9th Division was withdrawn from Vietnam in August 1969. With no US infantry units remaining in the Mekong Delta area of operations 162 AHC primary missions were in support of the Army of the Republic Of South Vietnam ARVN forces and Special Forces and allied operations in the IV Corps area including supply and support for the US Embassy in Cambodia.

With the winding down of US forces 162nd Assault Helicopter Company was the last assault helicopter unit in Vietnam and was inactivated on 3 April 1972.
