14 Aviation Battalion was activated at Fort Benning on 3 September 1964 and deployed to Saigon South Vietnam on 14 October 1964 assigned to US Army Support Command Vietnam. The Battalion moved to Nha Trang on 21 October 1964 and call signed Fighting 14 operated fixed wing assets providing surveillance over I and II Corps Tactical Zones together with long distance cargo and VIP passenger transport throughout South Vietnam with 18 Aviation Company 51 Transport Detachment 92 Aviation Company and 339 Transport Company as its initial flying units. I Corps Aviation Company 20 Aviation Detachment 54 Aviation Company 57 Aviation Company 131 Aviation Company 61 Aviation Company 134 Aviation Company 135 Aviation Company 220 Aviation Company were added to the Battalions assets.
Fighting 14 was re assigned to the US Army Aviation Group Vietnam on 15 April 1965 which became 12 Aviation Group on 31 August 1965. By April 1966 the Battalion had returned most of its fixed wing assets back to the US and relocated to Lane Army Heliport Qui Nhon to begin operations as 14 Combat Aviation Battalion and renamed Versatility providing support to the Korean 9 White Horse and Capitol Infantry Divisions. 161 and 174 Assault Helicopter Companies were assigned 1 June 1966 and 282 AirMobile Company was assigned on 12 June 1966 with the last fixed wing components detached in September 1966. 61 92 and 134 Aviation Companies were reequipped with UH 1 Hueys in the US and returned to 14 Combat Aviation Battalion on 1 November 1966.
14 CAB relocated to Chu Lai was reassigned 17 Combat Aviation Group to support Task Force Oregon later 23 Americal Division for operations in I Corps Tactical Zone and added 196 Assault Support Helicopter Company Flipper in February 1967 providing the Battalion with its first CH 47 Chinook medium lift helicopters and 71 Assault Helicopter Company in April 1967. 176 Assault Helicopter Company and 178 Assault Support Helicopter Company were reassigned to 14 CAB in November 1967. The Battalion provided support resupply reconnaissance combat assaults artillery displacement administrative unit moves command and control medical evacuation armed helicopter escort and other assigned missions to 23 Infantry Division and 2 ARVN Division.
14 CAB was reassigned to 16 Combat Aviation Group on 6 January 1968 Headquarters Company 174 AHC 176 AHC and 178 ASHC were officially attached to 23 Americal Division and 161 AHC was released from the Battalion to form A Co 123 Combat Aviation Battalion. In December 1968 132 Assault Support Helicopter Company joined 14 CAB and the Battalion supported Operation Holly for the Chu Lai Bob Hope Shows during December 1969 transporting thousand troops to and from Fire Bases and Bob Hope and his Troupe from an Aircraft Carrier.
116 AHC Hornets and Stingers was placed under the operational control of 14 CAB on 7 July 1970 and was assigned to the Battalion on 1 January 1971 creating the biggest CAB in Vietnam with 71 Assault Helicopter Company Rattlers and Firebirds 174 Assault Helicopter Company Dolphins and Sharks 176 Assault Helicopter Company Minutemen and Muskets 132 Assault Support Helicopter Company Hercules and 178 Assault Helicopter Support Company Boxcars.
14 CAB supported Operation Lam Son 719 the incursion into Laos with combat operations from 1 to 7 February 1971 and also participated in Operation Dewy Canyon II with a forward base at Khe Sahn.
14 CAB began its stand down On 14 September 1971 and all personnel were processed out of Vietnam by 25 October 1971.
