1 Aviation Company was activated at Fort Riley in February 1957 to provide aviation support to the 1 Infantry Division.
1 Aviation Battalion was activated on 2 January 1964 at Fort Riley taking over from 1 Aviation Company 1 Infantry Division to provide increased aviation asset to 1 Infantry Division operations. The Battalion deployed to Vietnam with 1 Infantry Division in July 1965 locating to Phu Loi Base Camp comprising A Company Airlift Hueys B Company Guns with Huey gunships and C Company Scouts LOH.
Combat operations quickly commenced and undertook three major operations Hump Bushmaster I and Bushmaster II before the end of the year. Operation Marauder Crimp II and Rolling Stone were carried out by March 1966 with the battles of Ap Tau O then Srok Dong and Minh Thanh Road during June and July 1966 and Operation Attleboro undertaken in November 1966.
In 1967 1 Infantry Division undertook Operations Cedar Falls Junction City Manhattan and Shenandoah II during which the Division suffered heavy casualties at the Battle of Ong Thanh on 17 October 1967with 58 KIA. During the Tet Offensive commencing 31 January 1968 the Division helped secure Tan Son Nhut Air Base and undertook Operation Quyet Thang Resolve to Win in March 1968 and participated in the largest operation of the Vietnam War Operation Toan Thang Certain Victory in April 1968.
The Division conducted reconnaissance in force and ambush operations including the major multi divisional Operation Atlas Wedge in the first half of 1969 and undertook Dong Tien Progress Together operations to assist South Vietnamese forces to take a more active role in combat in the second half of the year including battles along National Highway 13 Thunder Road. The Division to Fort Riley in April 1970. 1 Aviation Battalion was inactivated on its reorganisation and redesignation to Aviation Company 1 Infantry Division at Fort Riley on 21 April 1972 and was again reorganized and redesignated as 1st Aviation Battalion on 2 September 1981. The Battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 1st Aviation Regiment on 16 November 1987.
