History
Turkey became the eighth partner in the JSF Project on 12 July 2002 joining the US UK Italy the Netherlands Canada Denmark and Norway planning
to initially order 116 F-35A CTOL Air Force versions at a reported cost of $11 billion. Under the plan from 2014 the F-35 will be produced under license in Turkey by Turkish Aerospace Industries TAI one of the two international suppliers to Northrop Grumman the other being Terma in Denmark.
Turkey worked closely with Lockheed Martin on the System Development and Demonstration phase of the JSF program enabling Turkey to influence elements of the aircrafts design with input from Turkish Air Force personnel.
Political friction between the US and Turkey and the US refusal to share the software source code for the F-35 has delayed the programme but Turkey
agreed in principle to order two F-35As in January 2012. However due to the technical problems with the aircraft and the uncertainties over the rising
costs Turkeys first F-35s are now due to be delivered in 2017 as opposed to 2015.
