Octava Escuadrilla 8 Squadron

Octava Escuadrilla 8 Squadron was activated on 4 September 1976 to operate the six AV 8A and two TAV 8A Harriers obtained from the USMC modified to Spanish requirements designated AV 8S and TAV 8S and named the Matador. The Squadron operated in the fighter attack role and undertook regular deployments aboard the Spanish Navys aircraft carrier SPS Deldalo following modernisation and strengthening of the flight deck. Five additional Matadors were received in 1981. The aircraft carrier Principe de Asturias was activated on 30 May 1988 and replaced the Dédalo which was retired in 1989. The Principe de Asturias carried 12 Harrier and 12 SH 3 and AB 212 helicopters. 8 Squadron was disbanded in 1996 on the retirement of the AV 8S Matador.
