339 Skvadron was activated on 1 July 1956 at Gardermoen Air Base equipped with F 86K Sabre all weather fighter aircraft. The Squadron moved to Bodo AB in September 1960 and was disbanded in 1963 with the Sabres reallocated to 334 Skv.

339 Squadron was reactivated at Bardufoss Air Base in January 1964 assigned to 139 Luftving equipped with UH 1B helicopters tasked with Norwegian Army support in northern Norway. 339 Skv deployed to Lebanon in April 1978 as part of NorAir UNIFIL returning in July 1979. The Squadron received Bell 412SP Arapaho helicopters in September 1987 with the last UH 1B retiring in January 1989. 339 Skvadron operates a detachment at Rygge AB taking over the Bell 412SP helicopters of 720 Skv on its disbandment in July 2014.
