Defence Helicopter Command DHC was activated on 4 July 2008 at Gilze Rijen AB to control the 301 Squadron Apaches 298 Sqn Chinooks 300 Sqn Cougars the RNLAF VIP Alouettes and RNLN 860 Squadron and 7 Squadron both equipped with SH-14D Lynx based at De Kooy AB to provide support to all arms of the Netherlands Defence organisation including the Air Mobile Brigade the Marine Corps the Special Forces and Special Security Brigade of the Royal Marechaussee.

The DHC provides support for UN and NATO operations in out-of-area deployment theatres and in Afghanistan under ISAF the Chinooks and Cougars were on rotation deployed to Kandahar Air Field KAF and the Apaches to Tarin Kowt TK in Uruzgan.
