Squadron History

Eskadrille Squadron 727 was established on 1 November 1952 at Flyvestation Karup with the F 84G Thunderjet and reequipped with North American F 100 Super Sabre in 1959. The Squadron moved to Skrydstrup Air Base on 1 April 1974.

In 1980 Esk 727 was the first RDAF Squadron to receive the F 16 fighter replacing its F 100 Super Sabre aircraft and was declared fully
operational on 26 August 1981. Initially tasked with the conversion training pilots for F 16s for Skrydstrup based units the Squadron also provided training for ground attack replacing the F 100 Super Sabre in this role. Once both Esk 727 and 730 were fully operational with F 16s the training task went to Esk 723 until its disbandment in 2001 when the training mission returned to Esk 727. The Squadron received MLU F 16s in 2003. The Quick Reaction Alert QRA is also maintained with 4 F 16s on standby and the QRA also provides Red Air adversaries in air to air combat training.

Esk 727 has participated in Operation Allied Force Balkans 1999 and Operation Enduring Freedom 2002 2003 and has provided NATO Air Policing tasks in the Baltic 2004 2009 2011 and Iceland 2009 2010 with its sister unit Esk 730.

This patch dates from the early 1970s.
