During the Second World War the Air Ministry allocated the squadron number 450 to the Royal Australian Air Force with the RCAF allocated the numbers from 400 to 449 for squadrons. However Canada received permission to adopt the squadron number 450 and activated 450 Heavy Transport Helicopter Squadron on 29 March 1968 at RCAF Station St Hubert equipped with CH 147 Chinook helicopters. The Squadron relocated to CFB Ottawa and redesignated 450 Transport Helicopter Squadron in May 1970 and formed a detachment at CFB Edmonton. On 1 January 1979 the Squadron was split to form a second Chinook 447 Squadron at CFB Edmonton.

On 1 August 1991 the Squadron was renamed 450 Composite Helicopter Squadron and the CH 147 Chinook was withdrawn from service in the autumn of 1991. 450 Squadron continued to operate CH 135 Twin Huey helicopters in support of the RCMP and Joint Task Force 2. The Squadron was redesignated 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron on 1 April 1993 and moved back to 1 Wing at CFB St Hubert in August 1994. The Squadron was inactivated on 1 January 1998.

The Squadron was reestablished as 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron on 2 May 2012 at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa assigned to 1 Wing at CFB Kingston and received the new CH 147F Chinook helicopters on 27 June 2013.
