Squadron History
436 Transport Squadron reactivated at RCAF Station Dorval on 1 April 1953 equipped with CC 119 Flying Boxcar transport aircraft to to provide air transport for the RCAF transport support for the Canadian Army and to support increased NATO and UN involvement. Ration runs seasonal resupply operations army cooperation exercises airlifts mercy missions training flight testing air shows a Coronation fly past were undertaken in Canada. NATO support operations including Op Rhumba Queen the transfer of 1 Fighter Wing personnel and ground equipment from North Luffenham England to Marville France in January 1955 and the airlift of supplies to the Air Division in June 1955 familiarized crews with
North Atlantic and European weather ICAO procedures and continental route flying in general and provided valuable experience for overseas operations that followed. On 1 July 1956 the Squadron relocated to RCAF Station Downsview in Toronto following an explosion and fire which destroyed one hangar and adjacent office buildings three aircraft 436 and 426 Squadrons records aircrew equipment and flying-gear. Downsview was an ideal strategic transport location being very close to 1 Supply Depot one of RCAFs key logistics support bases.
The Squadrons first major deployment was to Italy in November 1956 to provide transport support during the Suez Crisis returning in January 1957. The Squadron also provided significant support to the expansion to Canadas Arctic with the supply of remote Arctic and sub-Arctic bases. The Squadron provided support for para drop and other tactical exercises with army airborne troops.
The Squadron moved to RCAF Station Uplands in August 1964 and requipped with C 130 E Hercules in 1965. 436 Transport Squadron relocated to CFB Trenton on 11 August 1971 and has upgraded to CC 130 H Hercules and the CC 130 J Super Hercules. The 1990s and 2000s saw a significant increase in international operations with missions in the former Yugoslavia Rwanda the Congo East Timor Central America Afghanistan and Libya as part of Canadas contribution to United Nations and NATO operations. 436 Transport Squadron is Canadas only Squadron equipped with the C 130 J Hercules and the only Squadron that conducts airdrop missions with the Canadian Army.
