409 All Weather Fighter Squadron AWF Squadron was reactivated on 1 November 1954 at RCAF Station Comox equipped with CF 100 Canuck all weather fighter aircraft on North American Air Defence fighter interceptor duty later NORAD over the west coast under Air Defence Command.

Nighthawk Squadron deployed to RCAF Station Namao for conversion to CF 101 Voodoo fighters under 425 AWF Squadron between 5 February and 13 March 1962 retuning to RCAF Station Comox to continue Air Defence Command tasking.

The Squadron was redesignated 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron on 1 July 1984 relocated to CFB Cold Lake reequipped with CF 18 Hornet tactical fighters. 409 TFS Nighthawks moved to CFB Baden Soellingen West Germany on 7 June 1985 as part of Canadas commitment to NATO. In October 1990 the Nighthawks deployed to Doha Qatar in the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Friction the Canadian contribution to Operation
Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Following its return to CFB Baden Soellingen the Squadron disbanded on 25 June 1991 as part of the withdrawal of Canadian Forces from Europe.

The Squadron reactivated as 409 Combat Support Squadron at CFB Comox on 1 April 1993 without aircraft and disbanded on 1 July 1994.

409 Tactical Fighter Squadron TFS was reactivated on 6 July 2006 at 4 Wing Cold Lake with CF 18 Hornets on the amalgamation of 416 Tactical Fighter Squadron and 441 Tactical Fighter Squadron. The Squadron assisted by 410 Tactical Fighter Operational Training Squadron deploys tactical fighter air defence forces for Canadian and allied defence under NORAD with fighter crews are on stand by ready to respond to aerospace threats.
