Unit history 1974-1991

33 Squadron reformed at Odiham in 1971 as the RAFs first Puma squadron providing tactical helicopter support to UK land Forces taking part in exercises and operations in all theatres.

The unit has taken part in several major RAF operations, most noticeably the Gulf War of 1991, and Operation Agricola, the Kosovo peacekeeping force. During the 1990s, the Squadron moved to RAF Benson. The Squadron has also taken part in Operation Barwood in Mozambique provided helicopter support to NATO forces in Bosnia as well as deployments to Iraq during Operation TELIC. On return from operations in Iraq in 2009, the Squadron was joined by No 230 Squadron at RAF Benson to co-locate the Puma Force. The focus of the Squadron in 2013 is essential pre-deployment training of Land Forces for Operation Herrick including Exercises Grand Prix and Askara Thunder in Kenya.
