Unit history 1960-1990

The Royal Air Force No 7 FTS Flying Training School at RAF Valley provided advanced flying training of student pilots with Vampire T11s was renumbered No 4 FTS Flying Training School on 15 August 1960. The ageing Vampire T11 were replaced by the Folland Gnat T1 by August 1963. The first Hawk T1 to was delivered to 4 FTS in 1976 and the final Gnat course graduated on 24 November 1979. In July 1977 the 4 FTSs first Hawk course commenced following the training of the first Hawk QFIs some 3 months previously. Since then courses have progressed with 1 2 and 3 Squadrons.
