History 2008 2015
7 FP Force Protection Wing Headquarters was activated at RAF Coningsby in 2008 to increase the RAFs deployable Expeditionary assets commanding 15 Squadron RAF Regiment at RAF Honington 2503 Squadron Royal Auxiliary Air Force Regiment RAF Police RAF Intelligence specialists and support staff who are tasked with providing Force Protection Command and Control to deployed air assets at Expeditionary overseas bases.
The Wing deployed to Basra Iraq in 2009 and had the distinction of being the last Royal Air Force ground fighting unit to leave Iraqi soil at the end of Operation Telic major combat operations in 2009.
7 FP Wing deployed to Kandahar Airfield Afghanistan in November 2010 returning on 28 February 2011. The Wing with a security squadron of RAF Police took over Force Protection duties at Camp Bastion Helmand Province Afghanistan on 29 October 2012 under Op Herrick 17 for a six month deployment augmented by soldiers from the 5 Contingent Tongan Defence Services and an Automated Sense and Warn detachment from 16 Regiment Royal Artillery and A Squadron The Queens Royal Lancers.
7 Force Protection Wing 15 Squadron RAF Regiment from RAF Honington 34 Squadron RAF Regiment from RAF Leeming and RAF Police personnel deployed to Camp Bastion Helmand Province Afghanistan in May 2014 for Op Herrick 20 returning on 30 October 2014 having the distinction of being the last Royal Air Force ground fighting unit to leave Afghanistan at the end of Operation Herrick major combat operations with the Camp Bastion Union Flag.
