Defence Helicopter Flying School DHFS was formed on 1 April 1997 at RAF Shawbury on the disbandment of 2 FTS Flying Training School to provide helicopter flying training to the RAF Army and Navy equipped with Squirrel and Bell Griffin helicopters.

Following Ground Training School students commence basic flying training under either 705 Naval Air Squadron or 660 Squadron Army Air Corps AAC both Single Engine Rotary Wing Squadrons. RAF students and some RN students progress to the Multi Engine Advanced Rotary Wing Squadron designated 60 Reserve Squadron RAF.

Some students are detached from RAF Shawbury for periods to the DHFS Search and Rescue Training Unit SARTU based at RAF Valley.
