History  

612 County of Aberdeen Squadron RAF Reserves was activated in 1997 at RAF Leuchars from The Air Transportable Surgical Squadron to provide a 25 bed field hospital for medical and surgical support and to augment regular RAF medical emergency response teams under the functional control of Tactical Medical Wing at RAF Lyneham.

The Squadrons first operational role provided the medical and nursing support for 33 Field Hospital for two weeks of Exercise Saif Sarea II in Oman in September and October 2001 dealing with over 100 military personnel inpatients suffering mostly from heat injuries. The majority of 612 Squadron staff were combat deployed to Kuwait Cyprus and Basra and Al Ahmara Iraq in 2003 during the early phase of Operation Telic and carried out an additional deployment to the field hospital at Shaibah Logistic Base SLB for Operation Telic 8 2006 2007. Squadron members have deployed to 34 Field Hospital, Joint Force Support A Medical Group at Camp Bastion Afghanistan during Op Herrick.

The Squadron undertook Annual Continuous Training in Cyprus 2014 and deployed to Norway for Exercise Wintermarch 2015.
