History
Following active service as a Spitfire fighter Squadron in WWII 602 City Of Glasgow Squadron was reformed at Royal Navy Air Station RNAS Abbotsinch on 10 May 1946 equipped with Spitfire F 14 fighter aircraft tasked with day fighter operations as part of the reactivation of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force. The Squadron upgraded to F 21 and F 22 fighters and moved flying operations to nearby Renfrew Airfield in July 1949 while aircraft maintenance remained at RNAS Abbotsinch. The Squadron received Vampire FB 5 single seat twin boom jet fighter bomber aircraft in January 1951 with maintenance operations relocated to Renfrew Airfield in July 1951. 602 Squadron added a number of Vampire F 3 fighters to its fleet in August 1953 which operated alongside its FB 5s. The Squadron relocated back to RNAS Abbotsinch in June 1954 due to increasing civil air traffic using Renfrew Airfield. 602 Sqn replaced its remaining F 3 fighters with Vampire FB 9 fighter bombers in November 1954 and continued FB 5 and FB 9 operations until disbanded on 10 March 1957 when all RAuxAF flying units were deactivated.
602 City Of Glasgow Squadron was reformed in central Glasgow on 1 July 2006 on the redesignation of the Mission Support Element of 603 City of Edinburgh Squadron and its upgrading to Squadron status as part of the new Royal Air Force Reserves to continued ISTAR Intelligence Surveillance Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance mission support to RAF Sentinel Sentry Shadow R1 and MQ 9 Reaper units at RAF Kinloss RAF Waddington and overseas and to provide operational support to the RAF Air Traffic Management Force. The Squadron has deployed its specialist elements to Cyprus Iraq Oman Afghanistan London for the Olympic Games in 2012 and the National Air Traffic Control Centre Swanwick to supplement regular RAF personnel.
