234 Squadron was reactivated on 22 October 1958 at RAF Chivenor on the renaming of one of 229 Operational Conversion Unit OCU training squadrons equipped with Hunter F 6 and FGA 9 aircraft tasked with the operational training of Hunter pilots. The Squadron also had a supplementary air defence role as part of the mixed fighter force to act as point defence fighters and capable of helping out dedicated Air Defence fighter aircraft in an emergency.

234 Squadron relocated to RAF Brawdy with 229 OCU on 2 September 1974 RAF Chivenor was closed for refurbishment. At the same time 229 OCU was redesignated Tactical Weapons Unit TWU with 234 Reserve Squadron remaining as one of its components. 234 Squadron reequipped with Hawk T 1A aircraft continuing its supplementary air defence role as part of the mixed fighter force with the Hawk T1As modified to carry a pair of AIM 9L Sidewinder air to air missiles to act as point defence fighters and capable of helping out dedicated F 4 Phantom and Tornado F3 fighter aircraft in an emergency. A second Tactical Weapons Unit was activated at RAF Chivenor as 2 TWU on 18 September 1981 with the RAF Brawdy TWU redesignated 1 Tactical Weapons Unit retaining 234 squadron as one of its constituent Squadrons.

234 Squadron was inactivated with 1 TWU and its second component 79 F Squadron on 31 August 1992.

The following day 1 September 1992 234 Squadron was reactivated allocated as a squadron of 4 Advanced Flying Training School AFTS at RAF Valley which had taken over the duties of the TWUs. The Squadron was disbanded on 1 April 1994 when renumbered as 208 Reserve Squadron
