Squadron History 1947 2013

92 Fighter Squadron reactivated on 31 January 1947 equipped with Meteor fighters on the renumbering of 91 Squadron at RAF Acklington and deployed on a goodwill tour of Scandinavia in 1949. The Squadron received Sabre F 4 fighters in February 1954 becoming along with 66 Squadron part of the only Sabre wing in Fighter Command before reequipping with Hunter fighter aircraft in April 1956 while based at RAF Linton on Ouse.

In 1960 the Squadron was chosen as Fighter Commands official aerobatic squadron the RAF Aerobatic Display Team taking over from 111 Squadron adopting the name the Blue Diamonds and operating from RAF Middleton St George. 92 Squadron reequipped with Lightning F 2s in April 1963 and continued to perform displays.

In December 1965 92 F Squadron along with 19 Squadron were allocated to RAF Germany with 92 Squadron relocating initially to RAF Geilenkirchen West Germany then moving to join 19 Squadron at RAF Gutersloh. The Squadron disbanded at RAF Gutersloh on 31 March 1977.

In January 1977 92 Designate Squadron began training with Phantom FGR 2 fighter aircraft at RAF Wildenrath for air defense and was fully activated as 92 Squadron on 1 April 1977. 92 F Squadron with 19 F Squadron deployed Phantom FGR 2 fighters to RAF Akrotiri Cyprus to provide air defence following the relocation of V AC Squadron and 29 F Squadron with their Tornado F 3 air defence fighters from Akrotiri to Dhahran AB Saudi Arabia after the Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait. With the fall of the Berlin Wall and the rundown of RAF Germany 92 F Squadron disbanded on 5 July 1991.

In 1992 92 Reserve Squadron formed at RAF Chivenor as part of 7 Flying Training School equipped with Hawk aircraft for weapons training but was disbanded on 30 September 1994 on the closure of RAF Chivenor when flying weapons training relocated to RAF Valley.

In November 2008 the 92 Reserve Squadron number plate was allocated to Tactics and Training Wing of the Air Warfare Centre at RAF Waddington.
