Squadron history 1945 1984
50 Squadron ended WWII equipped with Lancaster bombers at RAF Skellingthorpe under Bomber Command undertaking bombing missions against targets in Germany and occupied Europe. The Squadron relocated to RAF Sturgate on 15 June 1945 before moving to RAF Waddington on 25 January 1946 and reequipping with Lincoln B2 bombers in July 1946. The Squadron disbanded on 31 January 1951.
The Squadron reactivated at RAF Binbrook on 15 August 1952 equipped with Canberra B2 light jet bombers then moved to RAF Upwood on 9 January 1956 before disbanding on 1 October 1959.
50 Squadron reformed at RAF Waddington on 1 August 1962 equipped with Vulcan B1 bombers from 617 Squadron which had been reequipped with Vulcan B2s. 50 Squadron upgraded Vulcan B2 bombers in December 1966. The Squadron provided two Vulcan crews for Operation Black Buck long range bombing missions from Ascension Island to Port Stanley airfield during the Falklands War in May 1982. Six of the Squadrons Vulcans were converted to single point Vulcan K2 tankers to provide air to air refueling to supply flights to the South Atlantic with the first conversion entering service on 23 June 1982. 50 Squadron retained three Vulcan B2s for continuation training and continued in the tanking role becoming the last RAF unit to operate Vulcans until the Squadron disbanded on 31 March 1984.
