42 Squadron operated Hurricane and Thunderbolt fighter bombers in the Burma campaign disbanding on 30 December 1945 at Meiktela.Burma.
42 Squadron was re activated on 1 October 1946 at RAF Thorney Island on the renumbering of 254 Squadron equipped with Beaufighter tasked with maritime strike attack as part of Coastal Command disbanding on 15 October 1947.
On 28 June 1952 42 Squadron reformed at RAF St Eval with Shackleton patrol aircraft for maritime reconnaissance duties. The Squadron relocated to RAF St Mawgan in 1956 and converted to Nimrod MR 1s in April 1971. In April 1982 the unit deployed aircraft to Ascension Island as part of the first phase of Operation Corporate the recovery of the Falkland Islands and in August 1983 upgraded to Nimrod MR 2s. The Squadron provided
crews as part of the Nimrod detachment in Oman involved in Operation Granby in 1990 and in January 1991 it set up a major detachment in Cyprus to provide additional further support to the Allied forces for Operation Desert Storm.
The Squadron disbanded in October 1992 and reformed as 42 Reserve Squadron Nimrod Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Kinloss Moray on the renumbering of 236 OCU. The squadron flew its last Nimrod MR 2 flight on 30 March 2010 and was formally disbanded on 26 May 2011.
