Squadron History 1948  2013

39 Squadron reactivated at Nairobi in Kenya on 1 April 1948 with Tempests for fighter operations and disbanded on 28 February 1949. The Squadron reformed on 1 April 1949 at Fayid in the Suez Canal Zone with Mosquito night fighter unit tasked with the defense of the Canal. Meteors were received in March 1953 and the Squadron relocated to Malta in January 1955 disbanding at RAF Luqa on 30 June 1958.

39 Squadron reformed on 1 July 1958 operating Canberra PR Mk 3s for photo-reconnaissance duties on the renumbering of 69 Squadron at RAF Luqa and upgraded to Canberra PR Mk 9s in October 1962.

The Squadron relocated to RAF Wyton in September 1970 with its Canberras as part of the drawdown from the Mediterranean and disbanded on 1 June 1982. 39 Squadron reactivated on 1 July 1992 at RAF Wyton on the renumbering of 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit PRU equipped with Canberra PR Mk 9 and moved to RAF Marham in December 1993 where it also received a number of Canberra PR Mk 7s. The Squadron was the last remaining military operator of the Canberra in the photographic reconnaissance role before disbanding on 30 July 2006.

39 Squadron was reformed on 1 January 2007 at Creech AFB Nevada on the renumbering of 1115 Flight which had been activated in January 2005 to operate MQ-1 Predator UAVs and which formed A Flight 39 Squadron with B Flight receiving the MQ-9 Reaper UAVs. The UAVs based and maintained at deployed locations in Afghanistan were flown by pilots based at Creech AFB under the Combined Joint Predator Task Force with the Squadron also providing administrative support to UK personnel operating MQ-1 Predator. In November 2007 39 Squadrons MQ-9 Reapers began combat operations in Afghanistan. The Squadron is to relocated from Creech AFB to join newly reactivated 13 Squadron at RAF Waddington.
