Squadron history 1944 1982

XXXV Madras Presidency Squadron reequipped with Lancaster bombers continuing their pathfinder role at RAF Graveley in March 1944 under 8 Group. In 1946 35 Squadron was augmented by crews and aircraft from other Squadrons to fly a very successful goodwill tour of the United States as many people were keen to see the famous Lancaster and returned to RAF Stradishall. The Squadron reequipped with Lincoln bombers in September 1949 before disbanding on 23 February 1950.

The Squadron reactivated at RAF Marham on 1 September 1951 equipped with Washington B 1 bombers before converting to Canberra twin engine light bombers in April 1954 and moved to RAF Upwood. 35 Squadron disbanded on 11 September 1961.

35 Squadron reformed at RAF Coningsby on 1 December 1962 equipped with Vulcan B2 bombers and Yellow Sun free fall nuclear bombs for high altitude strategic bombing as part of RAF Bomber Commands V bomber force. The Squadron relocated to RAF Cottesmore on 7 November 1964 and upgraded to WE 177B strategic nuclear bombs in mid 1966 for low level penetration that did not require a pre release pop up maneuver to improve the survivability of the Squadrons Vulcans.

With the Royal Navy becoming responsible for the nuclear deterrent with submarine launched missiles 35 Squadron relocated with its Vulcan B2 bombers and WE 177 nuclear weapons to RAF Akrotiri Cyprus in 1969 joining 9 Squadron to form the Near East Strike Force for low level penetration bombing tasks as part of the UKs contribution to CENTO Central Treaty Organisation. The Squadron participated in numerous NATO exercises and deployments in the Mediterranean Africa and Middle East and a deployment to Tehran and then New Zealand in 1973. 35 Squadron relocated to RAF Scampton in January 1975 joining 230 OCU and 617 and 27 Squadrons as Scampton Strike Wing V Bomber Force and disbanded on 1 March 1982.
