Squadron History 1946-2015
In March 1946 19 Squadron replaced its Mustangs with Spitfires and reequipped with Hornet F1s in October 1946 with Hornet F3 received in March 1948. The Squadron reequipped with its first jet aircraft the Meteor F4 in January 1951 and converted to Meteor F8s in April 1951. Hunter F 6s replaced the Meteors in 1956 before Lightning F2s arrived in late 1962 and the Squadron moved to RAF Gutersloh West Germany.
19 Squadron reequipped with Phantom FGR 2 air defence and strike fighters in January 1977 and moved to RAF Wildenrath and the Squadron disbanded in January 1992 on the closure of RAF Wildenrath.
The Squadron was reactivated as 19 Reserve Squadron on the renumbering of 63 Squadron fast jet training with Hawk T1s at RAF Chivenor in September 1992. Following the closure of RAF Chivenor the Squadron was moved to 4 Flying Training School FTS RAF Valley in September 1994 to providing advanced fast jet training with Hawk T1s and T2s.
