Following WWII service in the France Battle of Britain and the Far East 79 Squadron was disbanded at Meiktila Burma on 30 December 1945.

The Squadron was reactivated on 15 November 1951 at RAF Wunstorf West Germany equipped with flying Meteor FR 9 fighter reconnaissance aircraft. 79 Squadron reequipped with Swift FR 5 fighter reconnaissance aircraft in June 1956 and relocated to RAF Gutersloh in September 1956 to reduce the risk of being overrun too quickly due to the proximity of the Russian Zone to RAF Wunstorf. The Squadron was inactivated on 1 January 1961 on its renaming to 4 Squadron.

79 Squadron was reformed on 2 January 1967 at RAF Chivenor equipped with Hunter aircraft as part of 229 Operational Conversion Unit to provide pilot conversion training to Hunter fighters. The Squadron disbanded on 2 September 1974 and reformed at RAF Brawdy as one of the component squadrons of 1 Tactical Weapons Unit equipped with Hunter aircraft providing advance fighter weapons and instructor training. The Squadron received Hawk T1 trainers in 1977 and disbanded on 31 August 1992.
