Squadron history

3 Fighter Squadrons association with the Harrier began in the early 1970s with the Harrier GR 1 at RAF Wildenrath with the later GR 3 and GR 5 Harriers deployed successively at RAF Gutersloh during the 1980s before finally receiving the GR 7 and relocating to RAF Laarbruch in 1992. In 1999 with the drawdown of the RAF in Germany the Squadron moved back to the UK locating to RAF Cottesmore along with its sister squadron No IV AC Squadron RAF. As part of Joint Force Harrier 3 F Squadron operated alongside the Fleet Air Arm Sea Harriers and was capable of deployment from the Royal Navy aircraft carriers. Operations included Operation Allied Force over Kosovo in 1999 Operation Palliser over Sierra Leone in 2000 and Operation Telic over Iraq in 2003. In August 2004 6 Harriers deployed to Afghanistan in support of NATO forces. The Squadron later moved its Harriers to RAF Coningsby in 2006 and reestablished as the first operational front line RAF Typhoon squadron on 31 March 2006 being declared operational in 2007.

This patch dates from the 2012.
