Unit history 1941-2013
1435 Flight operated from 1941 in the defence of Malta then moving to Italy and the Balkan disbanding on 29 April 1945 at Falconara, Italy.
After No 23 Squadrons disbandment to convert to the Tornado at RAF Mount Pleasant in November 1988 the Falkland Islands Air Defence mission and Phantom FGR 2s were transferred to the newly reformed No. 1435 Flight.
The aircraft are permanently based in the islands while the aircrew from UK based Squadrons are cycled through No. 1435 Flight. The Flight has maintained its Maltese connection and aswell as Maltese cross markings the aircraft are named Faith, Hope and Charity after the legendary three Gloster Gladiators that defended Malta with the fourth reserve aircraft named Desperation added when the flight was revived in 1988 .
The Phantom FGR 2s were replaced in 1992 by four Tornado F3s which remained in service until September 2009 when they were replaced the Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4 which carry tailcodes that match the traditional names F, H, C and D.
This patch dates from the 1993.
