E 2C Hawkeye AEW aircraft were received by the JASDF in 1983 initially with 601 Hikotai Squadron at Misawa before the unit was redesignated Hiko Keikai Kanshitai Air Warning Surveillance Squadron on 31 March 2005 which incorporated the E-2C detachment at Naha.
This squadron was split up in 2014 renamed 1 Hiko Keikai Kanshitai for the element at Misawa the Naha detachment named 2 Hiko Keikai Kanshitai.
