Op Antica Babilonia began on 15 July 2003 as a military peacekeeping operation to restore security in the area through the assistance of training and equipping Government forces. The Italian Air Force element controlled by 6 ROA Reparto Operativo Autonomo Independant Operations Detachment as part of IT JTF provided air support to ground forces and operated from Tallil Air Base near An Nasiriyah. In April 2004 the Italian forces took part in their first major combat since WWII and were in contact fighting hostile factions including the Mahdi Army many times during the operation which concluded on 21 November 2006.
