History German Army Aviation Display Team
Heeresfliegerregiment 26 Army Aviation Regiment 26 was activated in 1979 at Roth Air Base Mittelfranken Bavaria equipped with BO 105P anti tank helicopters under II Corps Ulm as one of three anti tank helicopter Regiments to provide initial defence in a Soviet Warsaw Pact ground attack. The Regiment achieved operational status in 1980.
The Regiment comprised a Headquarters and three Branches namely Flying Branch Technical Branch and Supply Branch. Flying Branch 261 controlled the flight operations squadron and three helicopter squadrons each of which were divided into four flights. Technical Branch 262 provided helicopter technical services via four Squadrons with Staff Staffel Sqn responsible for management Test Flight and inspection two Maintenance Staffeln Sqns and one Repair Staffel Sqn responsible for maintenance repair weapons ammunition survival equipment fuelling while Supply Branch 265 supplied the Regiment with fuel ammunition and staff support with non aeronautical activities and tasks including catering transportation medical services security and defence and airfield repair. The Regiment also controlled Heeresfliegerstaffel 269 Army Flying Squadron 269.
Heeresfliegerregiment 26 regularly participated in NATO and German Army exercises to ensure readiness. The Regiment upgraded to BO 105PAH in 1991 and was reassigned to Luftmechanisierten Brigade 1 Air Mechanized Brigade in 1997. With the planned introduction of the Eurocopter Tiger gunship ordered in 1999 Heeresfliegerregiment 26 was redesignated Kampfhubschrauberregiment KHR 26 Attack Helicopter Regiment in 2003 and was named Franken. The regiment was reassigned to Luftbewegliche Brigade LBwglBrig 1 Airmobile Brigade in 2007. Prolonged delays occurred with the procurement of the Eurocopter Tiger and although extensive new facilities were constructed at Roth AB in anticipation of the receipt of Tigers the German Government decided not to reequip KHR 26 with the Tiger but to locate all Eurocopter Tiger helicopters at Fritzlar AB with Kampfhubschrauberregiment KHR 36 Attack Helicopter Regiment in 2011.
Army Flying Squadron 269 was inactivated in March 2013 and the last BO 105 helicopters leaving Roth AB on 25 September 2013 and KHR 26 itself inactivated on 30 June 2014.
