History
Jagdbombergeschwader Jabog 38 Fighter Bomber Wing 38 was activated at Jever AB on 1 July 1983 equipped with Tornado IDS aircraft on the redesignation of Waffenschule der Luftwaffe WaSLW 10 Aviation School of the Air Force 10 to provide weapons training to Tornado pilots and WSOs returning from completion of Tornado basic training at Tornado Trinational Tornado Establishment TTTE RAF Cottesmore England.
The Wing comprises a Headquarters and three Groups namely Flying Group Technical Group and Aerodrome Group. Flying Group controlled the flying training Squadron 381 Staffel Jabog 38 F. Technical Group provides aircraft technical services including maintenance and repair weapons and ammunition survival equipment fuelling Aerodrome fire protection while Aerodrome Group provides non aeronautical activities and tasks including transportation supplies medical services Aerodrome security and defence runway and airfield repair.
Jabog 38 was awarded the name Friesland on 26 April 1988 and the Wing activated its second Squadron 382 Staffel Jabog 38 F in April 1989 equipped with Tornado ECR aircraft to train pilots and WSOs for Suppression of Enemy Air Defences SEAD tasking. 2 Staffel Jabog 38 F transferred its Tornado ECR aircraft to Jagdbombergeschwader Jabog 32 Fighter Bomber Wing 32 second Squadron 322 Staffel at Lechfeld AB for front line operations commencing its new mission as the only German Air Force Suppression of Enemy Air Defences SEAD capable front line Squadron. 382 Staffel Jabog 38 F reequipped with 322 Staffels Tornado IDS aircraft in exchange.
With the closure of TTTE RAF Cottesmore on 24 February 1999 basic Tornado and weapons training for pilots and WSOs was transferred to Holloman AFB NM USA with Jabog 38 retasked with Europeanization orientation training to adapt US trained crews to the European landscape conditions and weather. The Wing reorganised and inactivated 382 Staffel on 1 July 1999 and replaced by a tactical training team providing complex tactical training courses for all Tornado crews.
Jagdbombergeschwader Jabog 38 Fighter Bomber Wing 38 was disbanded on 31 August 2005 with Europeanisation training of aircrew being undertaken by each operational Tornado Wing. Jever AB was closed at the end of September 2013.
