History   

Jagdbombergeschwader Jabog 35 Fighter Bomber Wing 35 was activated on 1 December 1958 at Fassberg AB and with an element forming at Norvenich AB on 1 February 1959 equipped with F 84F Thunderstreak fighter bombers. The Wing relocated to Husum AB on 1 October 1959 and adopted the black eagles head emblem. Jabog 35 converted to G 91 Gina light attack aircraft in July 1963. 

The Wing comprised a Headquarters and three Groups namely Flying Group Technical Group and Aerodrome Group. Flying Group controls the two flying Squadrons of the Wing 351 and 352. Technical Group provides aircraft technical services including maintenance and repair weapons and ammunition survival equipment fueling Aerodrome fire protection while Aerodrome Group provides non aeronautical activities and tasks including transportation supplies medical services Aerodrome security and defense runway and airfield repair. 

Jabog 35 was redesignated Leichtes Kampfgeschwader LeKG 41 Light Combat Wing 41 on 1 January 1966 adding reconnaissance to its tasking and continued with the eagles head emblem. 

A new Jagdbombergeschwader 35 Fighter Bomber Wing Jabog 35 was activated on 1 April 1975 on the redesignation of Leichtes Kampfgeschwader LeKG 42 Light Combat Wing 42 and reequipped with F 4F Phantom fighter bombers. Jabog 35 continued the traditions and stylised speed bird on German cross emblem of JG 73. 

The Wing again comprised a Headquarters and three Groups namely Flying Group Technical Group and Aerodrome Group. Flying Group controled the two flying Squadrons of the Wing 351 and 352. 

Jabog 35 added former East German Air Force Mig 29 Fulcrum air superiority fighter aircraft to its fleet in 1991 after the reunification of Germany. The Luftwaffe also established a Mig 29 Test Wing at Preschen in October 1991 which was merged with Jagdbombergeschwader 35 in February 1993 with the F 4F Phantoms remaining at Pferdsfeld and the Mg 29s at Laage. The MiGs at Laage formed a two ship NATO assigned QRA Quick Reaction Alert flight for NATO Air Policing in 1994. The Phantoms relocated to Laage in 1997 with joint Mig 29 and F 4F operations commencing in September 1997. Jabog 35 was officially redesignated Jagdgeschwader JG 73 Fighter Wing 73 on 18 September 1997 and awarded the name Steinhoff on the same day..
