History German 32 Jabog Tornado

JaBoG 32 Jagdbombergeschwader 32 Fighter Bomber Wing 32 West German Air Force was activated on 22 July 1958 at Lechfeld Air Base equipped with F 84F Thunderstreaks. The Wing was assigned to NATO tasked with fighter bomber tactical strike attack. JaBog 32 received F 104 Starfighters in 1965 and the last F 84F Thunderstreak left Lechfeld Air Base on 13 July 1966.

The Wing comprises a Headquarters and three Groups namely Flying Group Technical Group and Aerodrome Group. Flying Group controls the two flying Squadrons of the Wing 321 Staffel and 322 Staffel. Technical Group provided aircraft technical services including maintenance and repair weapons and ammunition survival equipment fuelling fire protection while Aerodrome Group provided non aeronautical activities and tasks including transportation supplies Aerodrome security and defence runway and airfield repair.

321 Staffel original emblem in 1958 was 1. Jabo32 above a blue panthers head facing left above two red lightning flashes taken from the badge of USAF 4512 Fighter Squadron which was tasked with training Jabog 32 pilots on the F 84F Thunderstreak at Luke AFB Arizona known as Kraut Field the 2nd Home of the Luftwaffe Tigers. The Staffel was named the Panthers. In 1961 the Squadron adopted the Morgenstern spiked mace emblem of the coupe arm striking with a three spiked ball mace above Jabo 321 on a black shield. 322 Staffel was named Flying Monsters in 1973 and adopted the red flying dragon emblem following a design competition in November 1976.

Jabog 32 activated a third flying squadron on 1 April 1980 with 323 Staffel equipped with seven HFB 320 Hansa jets for ECM training which had been based at Lechfield since 1976 under 4/61 Telecommunications Training Regiment and adopted a black crow emblem.

The Wings 321 and 322 Staffels began converting to Tornado IDS strike fighters in 1984 and in 1991 JaBoG 32 reequipped with 35 Tornado ECR fighters and commenced its new mission as the only German Air Force Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses SEAD capable wing. 321 Staffel adopted the name Lechfeld Tigers and a new tiger emblem in 1991 to reflect the new Tornado ECR and mission and was attended the 1994 NATO Tiger Meet at Cambrai France as a probationary member.  323 Staffel of Jabog 32 was inactivated in 1994. 321 Staffel attended the next NATO Tiger Meet at Bega in 1996 and the Lechfeld Tigers wereupgraded to full membership hosting NTM in 1998.

On 17 July 1995 JaBoG 32s Tornado ECRs were deployed to San Damiano Air Base Italy to carry out SEAD missions in support of NATOs Operation Deliberate Force over Bosnia and Herzegovina. These were the first combat operations for the German Armed Forces since World War II.

In 2008 the first German female combat pilot Ulrike Flender joined JaBoG 32. The Wing was disbanded on 31 March 2013 with personnel and aircraft joining the 1 Squadron of Aufklarungsgeschwader 51 AG 51 Reconnaissance Wing 51.
