Royal Navy Elementary Flying Training Squadron RN EFTS

History 1955 – 2013

1 Flying Training School reformed on 1 May 1955 on the renumbering of 22 Flying Training School at RAF Syerston equipped with the Percival Provost T1 responsible for basic flying training for Royal Navy and Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve pilots prior to advanced jet training at
7 FTS at RAF Valley. The training of RNVR pilots ceased in January 1957.

1 FTS moved to RAF Linton-on-Ouse in October 1957 and was joined by a squadron of Vampires from RAF Valley to provide all-through training of naval fixed-wing pilots in January 1958. Provost T1s were replaced by Jet Provost T3s from October 1960 and later with Jet Provost T4s. Chipmunk T10s were received to provide elementary training of Navy helicopter pilots. Vampires were transferred to 7 FTS at RAF Church Fenton in 1966 and with the cancellation of the Royal Navys replacement fixed-wing carriers Naval fixed-wing pilot training was run down with 1 FTS providing basic flying training solely for RAF pilots in November 1967 and the last Naval fixed-wing course graduating in July 1969.

In late 1969 Chipmunk training was transferred to RAF Church Fenton as the Royal Navy Elementary Flying Training Squadron RN EFTS and moved to RAF Leeming in November 1974 under RAF 3 Flying Training School FTS operating Bulldog T1 elementary training aircraft staffed
jointly with RAF and RN Qualified Flying Instructors QFIs supported by RAF ground crew. Training was deployed to RAF Topcliffe on a daily basis.

RN EFTS transfered to the control of 1 FTS once again in 1984. In July 1993 RN EFTS at RAF Topcliffe closed with its task transferred to the contractor-run Joint Elementary Flying Training Squadron which moved from RAF Topcliffe to RAF Barkston Heath in April 1995.

In July 2003 The Defence Elementary Flying Training School DEFTS took responsibility for elementary flying training for Army and Royal Navy student pilots with 703 Naval Air Squadron and 674 Squadron Army Air Corps supported by a civilian contract. The School uses Grob Tutor basic trainers with instructors a mixture of civilians and serving officers from the Navy Army and RAF. 703 NAS is located at RAF Barkston Heath with EFT providing 55 hours of flying training instrument flying navigation aerobatics formation and low level ready for streaming to helicopters or to fast jets.

This patch dates from the 1970s.
