Squadron History 1950 2013

824 Naval Air Squadron reformed in the early 1950 tasked with Anti Submarine Warfare ASW relocating to RNAS Culdrose in 1954 with Gannet AS 1s.  The Squadron reactivated in 1958 at RNAS Eglington in Northern Ireland with Whirlwind helicopters for ASW duties. In 1963 the Squadron again disbanded.

The Squadron reactivated in 1970 with Sea King HAS 1s and undertook the development of the ASW role. The squadron participated in the Falklands War following which it became responsible for the trials of the Sea King helicopter. The squadron again disbanded in August 1989
and its aircraft transferred to 819 Naval Air Squadron at Prestwick.

824 Naval Air Squadron reformed on 2 June 2000 at RNAS Culdrose equipped with Merlin HM Mk 1 helicopters for Pilots Observers Aircrew and Maintainer Training in Anti Submarine Warfare and Search and Rescue. Once trained the aircrew go to one of the front line Merlin squadrons 814 820 or 829 NASs.
