The Black Cats 702 Naval Air Squadron

The Black Cats formed in 2001 with two front-line Lynx maritime attack helicopters as the first Royal Navy Helicopter Display Team since the disbandment of The Sharks in 1992. Originally known as the Lynx Pair until renamed The Black Cats in 2004 the aircrew and engineers are all volunteers from 702 Naval Air Squadron and the Lynx Helicopter Force based at the Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton.

The team display all over the UK and at many European air shows And won the Steadman Sword for the best British participant at the Royal International Air Tattoo in 2003 and as Les Chats Noirs performed at the French Navys 30th Anniversary of operating the Lynx at Lanveoc in Brittany.

The name Black Cats is derived from the cat depicted on the 702 Naval Air Squadron emblem and the term blackcatting which is naval slang for one-upmanship.
