History

Tyne Tees Television in Newcastle commissioned the Royal Marines Commandos at the beginning of 1972 as to provide and demonstrate a Commandos fitness exercise regime for a series of broadcasts during their local news programmes in 1972.  Known as the Royal Marines Commando 7 Keep Fit programme the Commando exercises appeared in The Times newspaper Look! Magazine and attracted impressive acknowledgement from the sporting world.

Following a run of disastrous losses Hartlepool Football Club in Tyne Tees region arranged for the Royal Marine Commandos implement the regime with the players and Hartlepool lost only four of their next 15 matches. The Olympic yachting team arranged for the Royal Marine Commando to instuct every skipper and crew on the full Commando exercises.

While berthed in Newcastle HMS Fearless hosted Tyne Tees Television film crews and glamorous models who despite the cold demonstrated the Royal Marines Commando 7 Keep Fit exercises for later broadcast.

This patch dates from 1972.
