History  

Jagdbombergeschwader Jbog 34 Fighter Bomber Wing 34 was established at Norvenich AB on 1 October 1958 with one flying Squadron equipped with F 84F Thunderstreak fighter aircraft sharing accomodation with Jabog 31. 1 Staffel Squadron Jabog 34 was activated in December 1958 at Fassberg AB on the redesignation of 2 Staffel Squadron Jabog 35. Both the Norvenich and the Fassberg elements relocated to Memmingerberg in April 1959 when FSS Pilot School S moved out of Memmingerberg AB to Fassberg AB. The Wing was officially commissioned on 5 May 1959 and was assigned for NATO operations in October 1959. Two aircraft crashed in Czechoslovakia on 22 October 1959 following technical difficulties and the pilots captured found guilty of espionage before returned on 2 December 1959. 

The Wing comprises a Headquarters and three Groups namely Flying Group Technical Group and Aerodrome Group. Flying Group controls the two flying Squadrons of the Wing 341 and 342. Technical Group provides aircraft technical services including maintenance and repair weapons and ammunition survival equipment fuelling Aerodrome fire protection. Aerodrome Group provides non aeronautical activities and tasks including transportation supplies Aerodrome security and defence runway and airfield repair. 

Jabog 34 was assigned to 1 Luftwaffendivision 1 Air Division in 1964 and commenced conversion to F 104 Starfighter aircraft. Under NATO nuclear weapons sharing the US provided nuclear weapons for Germany as a non nuclear NATO state and for its military personnel to store handle practice and deploy the nuclear munitions but can only arm the bombs with authorization codes from the US Department of Defense. Jabog 34 began to train with the US Seventeenth Air Force in handling arming and delivering nuclear weapons including QRA with the F 104 Starfighter as the nuclear delivery platform armed with nuclear air to air and air to surface missiles as well as nuclear bombs. The US nuclear weapons were stored at Memmingerberg Air Base under USAFs 7261 Munition Support Squadron 702 MUNSS. The Wing activated a special security Staffel responsible for guarding the nuclear weapons facility and the nuclear armed Quick Reaction Alert QRA aircraft. 7261 MUNSS was redesignated 605 MUNSS in 1975. 

The Wing operated a number of liaison aircraft Piaggio P 149 D Dornier Do 28 D 2 Skyservant known as the Allgau Express and a T 33 T Bird for the transport of personnel and materials.The Wing took over the traditions of JG 54 Grunherz Fighter Wing 54 on 26 November 1982 and 341 Staffel was handed JG 54s Green Heart emblem. Jabog 34 activated its third Squadron the Zentrale Ausbildungseinheit F 104 G ZAE Central Training Unit F 104G in January 1983. After 242785 F 104 flying hours the Jabog 34 reequipped with Tornado IDS fighter aircraft on 23 October 1987. 

Jabog 34 was awarded the name Allgau on 8 May 1992. US Nuclear weapons were transferred from Memmingerberg to Ramstein AB on 29 February 1996 with USAF 605 Munition Support Squadron MUNSS inactivated.  

Jagdbombergeschwader Jbog 34 Fighter Bomber Wing 34 was inactivated on 30 June 2003 and Memmingerberg AB closed.
