Squadron History

Starting WWII with Blenheim bombers 84 Squadron moved to Egypt in September 1940 serving in Greece Iraq and the Western Desert. The Squadron relocated to Sumatra in 1942 carrying out raids against the advancing Japanese before being overrun and captured in Java. 84 Squadron reformed in India later in 1942 equipped with Vengeance dive bombers flying from Assam and North East India. The Squadron converted to Mosquito fighter bombers in February 1945 and re-equipped with the Beaufighter aircraft in September 1945. 84 Sqn converted to Brigands flying combat missions during Operation Firedog over Malaya in 1949.

84 Squadron disbanded on 20 February 1953 and reformed the same day at RAF Fayid Canal Zone equipping with Valetta transport aircraft on the renumbering of 204 Squadron. The Squadron relocated to Nicosia Cyprus in January 1957 and to Aden in January 1957. The Squadron added Beverley transport aircraft to its fleet in 1958 and provided transport during the insurgencies in Aden and Kuwait. 84 Squadrons Valetta flight was detached to become 233 Squadron on 1 September 1960 at RAF Khormaksar to provide general transport for the British Army in the Aden Protectorate. The Squadron received Andover transports in August 1967 and moved to RAF Sharjah and then to RAF Muharraq in December 1970 flying in support of army units in the Trucial States and Muscat and Oman providing scheduled routes between the Gulf stations and took over responsibility for VIP flights from the COMSAR Squadron. 84 Squadron disbanded at RAF Muharraq on 31 October 1971.

84 Squadron reformed at Akrotiri on 17 January 1972 on the merger of 1563 Flight and a detachment from 230 Squadron equipped with Whirlwind HAR 10 helicopters. 84 Sqn operated as two flights with A Flight based at RAF Akrotiri providing SAR troop support and communications and B Flight based at Nicosia providing support to the United Nation Forces in Cyprus. The Squadron reequipped with Wessex HC 2 helicopters in March 1981 upgrading to Wessex HU 5C in June 1984.

84 Squadron was reassigned to British Forces Cyprus at RAF Akrotiri in January 2003 to provide search and rescue cover and UN Peacekeeping Cypriot Turkish buffer zone duties and Griffin HAR 2 helicopters replaced the RAFs last Wessex helicopters on 1 April 2003.

84 Squadron is the only serving RAF Squadron never to have been based in the United Kingdom.
