Squadron History

48 Fighter Squadron was reactivated at Dow Field in November 1946 with P-47 Thunderbolts under Air Defense Command to provide air defence of the eastern United States. In October 1947 the Squadron converted to P-84B Thunderjets and was inactivated on 2 October 1949.

The Squadron was reactivated in November 1952 as 48 Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Grenier Air Force Base New Hampshire with F-47
Thunderbolts 48 FIS relocated to Langley AFB in early 1953 and reequipped with F-84Gs and then F-94C Starfires in autumn 1953. In the summer of 1957 the Squadron transitioned to F-102A Delta Daggers and reequipped with F-106 Delta Darts in autumn 1960. 48 FIS deployed to Florida in 1962 during Cuban Missile Crisis. In December 1968 Squadron personnel deployed to Osan AB South Korea without aircraft to relieve 318 FIS of their deployed alert using their F 106s following the USS Pueblo crisis which had started on 23 January 1968. The Squadron returned in June 1969 flying 318 FISs F 106s back to McChord from Korea and picked up their own F 106s and returned to Langley. 

48 FIS converted to F-15A Eagles in 1982 and inactivated on 31 December 1991.

The Squadron reactivated on 1 Jul 1996 as 48 Flying Training Squadron undertaking tanker and airlift pilot training.
