Wing History

1002 Air Police Squadron was activated in the 1950s as part of 1002 Inspector General Group when The Office of the Inspector General consolidated to oversee all inspection and safety function activities at Norton Air Force Base California commanded by the Deputy Inspector General for Inspection and Safety. 1002 Air Police was redesignated 1002 Security Police on 2 July 1967 in line with the redesignation of all Air Police Squadrons by USAF.

1002 SPS was inactivated on 31 December 1971 along with 1002d IG Group on the activation of the Air Force Inspection and Safety Center. The AFISC was divided into the Air Force Inspection Agency and the Air Force Safety Agency in August 1991 with the Air Force Safety Agency was later renamed the Air Force Safety Center. The Air Force Inspection Agency and the Safety Center relocated to Kirtland AFB New Mexico in July 1993 when Norton AFB was closed.

This patch dates from 1967.
