History

Joint Special Forces Aviation Wing JSFAW was activated at RAF Odiham on 2 April 2001 is a joint Royal Air Force and British Army Wing to coordinate the provision of helicopter aviation support to the United Kingdom Special Forces. The Wing is commanded by the Station Commander of RAF Odiham but the each Service retain full control of their respective personnel.

The Wing initially comprised 657 Squadron Army Air Corps AAC and 7 Squadron RAF to provide Lynx and Chinook in support of Special Forces training and combat operations worldwide including Iraq Afghanistan Middle East and Africa.

8 Flight Army Air Corps AAC joined the Wing in 2008 with its covert fleet of AS365N3 Dauphin II helicopters. 8 Flight AAC was upgraded to Squadron status adding Westland Gazelle AH1 helicopters to is fleet and was redesignated 658 Squadron in September 2013.
