Squadron History

Following its service in the Pacific Theatre with Hudson bombers 2 Squadron participated in the Malayan Emergency equipped with Lincoln and Canberra bombers. The Squadron took its Canberras to South Vietnam flying approximately 12000 sorties and dropped 76389 bombs with the loss on two aircraft and one crew. On its return from Vietnam 2 Squadron was based at RAAF Base Amberley Brisbane Queensland latterly using its Canberras predominately used for target towing and aerial mapping using call sign Magpie in recognition of the Squadrons emblem. 2 Squadron disbanded in 1982.

The squadron was re-activated in 2000 at RAAF Base Williamtown and RAAF Base Tindal to operate the Boeing 737 AEWC aircraft procurred as part of Project Wedgetail. The RAAF accepted the first two 737 AEWC aircraft.received on 26 November 2009 and three more at the end of 2010.
